The reliable Rough Guides have spent the past thirty years chaperoning us all over the world; now they have come up with a pointer to interesting things to do in the UK, snappily entitled “Make the Most of Your Time in Britain”, possibly as a follow-on from “Make the Most of Your Time on Earth” published last year.
The book is divided into 14 main themes throughout the British Isles – from urban adventures, wildlife and nature, adventures with kids, to great journeys, beaches and coastline, art and architecture: all colour coded and properly indexed with detailed maps.
Instead of being faced with a place and what there is to do in it, this book encourages you to think laterally and suggests several options that would make somewhere or something a destination in its own right.
There are a few obvious choices here but far more usual are suggestions that are fresh and interesting and make you want to look up train times immediately.
This is much more than a coffee table book. With inspiring photography, it should quickly become dog-eared and well read and will shut up cynics who feel that Britain doesn’t always have much to offer.
