Centrally placed in Piccadilly, this upmarket café serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Situated in a former luxury car showroom – hence the name – it was for 70 years a bank serving the nearby residents of Mayfair, before turning into this delightful, if sometimes noisy eating place.
With tiled black and white floors, high ceilings and chandeliers, it has a whiff of the past about it, reflected in the breakfast menu: eggs Benedict, home made fishcakes, grilled kippers and kedgeree; one almost expects Jeeves himself to be standing behind a pillar. Early birds may be served from 7am and ditherers will be rewarded with a huge choice. Late morning sees the home made croissants and pastries join the all day menu. Lunch and dinner menus are available separately.
It’s wise to book but you can just take your chance and walk in. It’s a particularly good place to meet someone, especially if you don’t know them well or are meeting for the first time: there is bound to be something on the menu they will like, be it just a mug of hot chocolate, a cream tea or Beluga caviar. And you might just spot someone famous too.
